METROSIL Discharge resistors
Metrosil Voltage Dependant Resistors (Varistors), or Non-linear Resistors, are predominantly based on silicon carbide. They are used to discharge generator excitation fields while limiting the voltage to an acceptable level.

Two types are available.

For low discharge currents (less than 600 Amps) and suitable field and discharge voltages, it is possible to supply a METROSIL which can be connected directly across the field at all times.

For higher currents the Metrosil Discharge Resistor is switched into the circuit just before the excitation field current is interrupted. This enables the use of higher current rated Metrosils.

Both types are supplied as assemblies of 150mm diameter discs, electrically connected in parallel. The number of discs and their thickness depends on the application details.
